Well I discovered there was nothing wrong with my code at all. I'm not sure why, but something about those few users was corrupt or something. I edited one of them, without making any changes, and as soon as I did, patch requests on the user (from my script) worked fine. So there must have been something anomalous I couldnt see in the data, a weird character or something. But once they were edited and saved with no manual changes by me other than clicking SAVE .... they were fine.
Weird.

Hi Lewis. Thanks for sharing this detailed use case. I wanted to check if the API calls are working? Based on your last post it seems like the issue resolved.
Also wanted to check if you're using API v3 endpoints?

The API calls were working all along, there was just something wacky in the user data that, as soon as I edited the user and saved it with no (VISIBLE IN THE UI) changes, the same script worked on them. So its kinda frustrating. :)
But anyway, yes I always exclusively use v3 endpoints.
