DNS Response Time Monitor from LoMo Sitemonitor locations.

Not sure anyone else has ever had this issue but we have had a few occasions where one of our DNS servers decided not to respond to DNS request for specific local domains before. How about adding under services an additional service type for example DNS that would provide pass/fail and DNS response times from selected DNS servers looking up a given record.

I might me the only lucky person who has experienced this so It might not be worth the development time but seems like it would be an easy add if it is worth it to others.

  • You are not the first. I believe Solar Winds has this function in their Application Monitoring module. This would be a nice feature for LM. rn1. If LM detects DNS is running on the box, add the DNS datasource to that device.rn2. The datasource could report if UDP/53 and TCP/53 are open and receiving connections.rn3. Launch a few customer-supplied hosts at it to see if they return a response to an A-record query.rn4. This would be cool--> provide the name of the Windows AD domain (e.g., corpdomain.local.) Theres a bunch of SVR records needed for Windows machines to resolve and find their domain controller. If those records dont exist (and their corresponding A records) users will not be able to login. Thatu2019s a nasty surprise before getting your first cup of coffee.rnHeres what Microsoft would consider proper for DNS records...rnhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/816587rn rnLM is all about heading off problems before they happen. This would be a nice feature towards that goal.
