You are not the first. I believe Solar Winds has this function in their Application Monitoring module. This would be a nice feature for LM. rn1. If LM detects DNS is running on the box, add the DNS datasource to that device.rn2. The datasource could report if UDP/53 and TCP/53 are open and receiving connections.rn3. Launch a few customer-supplied hosts at it to see if they return a response to an A-record query.rn4. This would be cool--> provide the name of the Windows AD domain (e.g., corpdomain.local.) Theres a bunch of SVR records needed for Windows machines to resolve and find their domain controller. If those records dont exist (and their corresponding A records) users will not be able to login.
