We use the API, but we use Groovy making direct calls way more than we use the Python SDK. The SDK is a front end for the API, it isn't the API itself. Plus the Python SDK is auto generated by a tool called Swagger, which doesn't always do everything right. The LM UI does use the API, exclusively.
I think @BMAC has taken the source code of the SDK and made his own modifications to it to make filter/field work. I haven't bothered. I just grab everything and filter in code.
