Better "Adding a Service" documentation?

I wanted to start looking into Services, the last time I messed around with one, they were more limited.

So I went to this page https://www.logicmonitor.com/support/adding-a-service and there is a list of all the options to add a service, but honestly there is no explanation at all.

For example:
1) is the IP/DNS name for the service needed? Why? What does it even do?
2) Why do I need to specify a collector? Is this like a Netscan where I can just pick any collector to take up the load? How much load does this add?
3) If I am picking an auto-balanced group, why must I pick a preferred collector?

I was about to type a long continuation but basically .... is there a page that actually explains these individual options in an in-depth fashion? Whether or not there is some allbound training or a badge for it or whatever, I'd think there would be some documentation discussing in detail what each item is, other than a simple listing of what it is.

Basically, this page seems written as a casual reference for people who already use this regularly. I'm wondering if there is any proper documentation somewhere or if its gatekept behind some training? I'm about to blunder through with trial and error, but I prefer not to. :)

Thanks I'll have to check it out I suppose. I tried to add members on the members page and even though I've specified a group and tried to specify * as the resource, I couldnt even save. Even though I had something in every field for adding members.

So i guess the UIv4 is going to be a struggle. Or something. Thanks!

Well I just did both of those and found them less helpful than the original page I linked. I did get 100% on the quiz part. :) But those just arent addressing any of my questions. I do appreciate your response though. Cheers!

I did figure out one thing, I had been unable to save in UIv4 when adding members, but it worked when using Uiv3. But I'm trying not to use the one that is visually cleaner, because I know its going away. But in UIv4 when adding members, when I put * in for resources and clicked out to the side, the save button stayed grey. Later I figured out that if I type in * and hit enter, it lights up the save button.

Also in UIv4 they claim I must, on the Basic Info page, select collectors. But as it turns out, you dont have to. Weird.

Anyway, I wanted to get all resources with a certain property set, and that worked, but I had 1400 items and the limit is 500. Oh well. Thanks for helping, I guess trial and error is the way, but appreciate that you linked those items. Cheers.

  • Heh. I don't use the feature myself (paid add-on). I last tried it years ago but found it didn't meet what I was looking for at the time.

I don't recall the specifics and my job and role has since changed. I believe it was to do something like only alerting when some % of servers had the same alert, but otherwise suppress the device-level alert. I believe Services was able to do it but was generating more alerts and not suppressing the device-level alerts. This may have also predated RCA/DAM functionality. I don't remember if I tried using Cluster Alerts at the time, or if that can provide that functionality.
