Display disconnected interfaces

Suggestion from a customer:

Can there be an option to easily show all interfaces, e.g. on a network switch, regardless of connection status? (a bit like you can show/hide \'\'all associated datasources\'\' for a host)

Normally active discovery will only show connected interfaces for a switch (logically, to avoid alerting on ports without connections); one customer mentioned that he has some switches that engineers will plug into, short term, for testing - so the port then appears on the host, then starts alerting shortly afterwards when disconnected. He wanted to be able to list all ports, to turn off alerting on normally-disconnected ones. We did this by removing the \'\'status = UP\'\' filter on a clone of the \'\'Interfaces (64 bit)-\'\' datasource, which allowed him to see all the ports on a switch and disable alerting on the currently disconnected ones.

I pointed out this will prevent newly-connected permanent connections from generating alerts if they fail, unless he remembers to re-activate alerts, but in his situation apparently the \'\'random test connection\'\' is far more common than adding a new piece of hardware so he accepted this drawback.

  • I would advise anyone who has a device theyd like monitored in this way to do the following: Clone the appropriate datasource, SNMPIF_64- generally, and modify their copy as above, with no filter on UP and persistent checked, then apply this directly to the devices using the applies-to field in the datasource. Some help is here, and wed be happy to answer questions about the process.
