api call to get hostid directly

Hi, is it possible to use an api call to get hostId via hostname? As far as I can tell, if you use getHost to see the hostID you also get a bunch of other info and have to parse through it. If you use getHostProperties then you have to have the hostID already. So, it seems to be a bit of a conundrum.
