Overview The March APAC User Group delivered a deep technical dive into how Origin Energy’s Integrated Gas division is using LogicMonitor beyond traditional infrastructure monitoring. Rather than focusing solely on network devices and hardware health, the team has evolved their deployment into a functional observability layer that supports safety and critical operations, regulatory reporting, and automated remediation across a geographically vast asset footprint. Operating across thousands of gas wells spanning hundreds of kilometers in Queensland, the team leverages LogicMonitor to monitor AWS infrastructure, serverless applications, SQL data integrity, GIS systems, and orchestration workflows. The result is a unified operational view that reduces manual intervention, improves response times, and, in some cases, fully automates incident resolution. This session showcased how LogicMonitor can be extended from infrastructure visibility into business-critical process validation and operational resilience . Key Highlights Functional Monitoring at Scale : Monitors AWS resources, EC2 instances, serverless applications, and web services across a distributed energy production environment. GIS Platform Health Checks : Implemented layered web checks to validate not only URL availability but map layer content integrity for safety and critical systems. SQL Data Validation Alerts : Built custom SQL-based checks to validate daily production data completeness across thousands of wells before regulatory reporting deadlines. Serverless Log Intelligence : Routed filtered CloudWatch logs through Logstash before ingestion to control log volume costs while improving Lambda troubleshooting. Ansible Auto-Remediation : Integrated LogicMonitor alerts with Ansible playbooks to automatically rebuild failing load balancer target groups without human intervention. PagerDuty + ServiceNow Integration : Established shared escalation paths to ensure alerts trigger structured response workflows across teams. Q&A Q: How is ServiceNow integrated into your escalation workflows? A: “It was pretty much out of the box. The only complication was that we use ServiceNow in a specific way internally, but the integration with LogicMonitor itself was straightforward.” Q: How long did it take to tune alerts to avoid noise? A: “It’s a never ending story. You’re always tuning alerts. If someone gets woken up at three in the morning for something that isn’t important, you know about it quickly.” Q: What drove the move to automated remediation with Ansible? A: “We had recurring load balancer failures where a target group would freeze. Once we detect the alert in LogicMonitor, it triggers an Ansible playbook that tears down the failing target group and rebuilds it automatically.” Q: Why introduce Logstash before ingesting logs into LogicMonitor? A: “Alerts are expensive in LogicMonitor, but they are everywhere else as well. We learned quickly to filter logs before they go into LogicMonitor rather than using it as a full log consolidation platform.” Q: How critical are these monitoring workflows to operations? A: “If SCADA systems aren’t available, the plant’s down. Availability of line of business applications isn’t just business continuity. It’s safety critical.” Customer Call-outs ⭐ “Serverless applications are a nightmare to debug. The more information you have in one place, the better.” ⭐ “If someone gets woken up at three o’clock in the morning for something that isn’t important, you know about it quickly.” ⭐ “Once we detect the alert, it fixes the problem without any intervention.” What’s Next 🎿 LogicMonitor Ski School March 9 – April 5 Our 4-week digital enablement program is designed to accelerate adoption and build confidence with AI-powered observability.
